Male Breast Reduction

Tissue can be excised through a small incision near the areola.

Fat can be removed with liposuction. A thin hollow tube is inserted through a small incision, leaving a nearly undetectable scar.
Male breast reduction involves the removal of excess fat and glandular tissue from a man’s chest. Through this procedure, a flat masculine chest can be realized. A variety of surgical techniques can be used such as ultrasonic liposuction, laser liposuction and surgical excision.
Is male breast reduction right for you?
If you are a male and you have excess breast tissue, this procedure may be an ideal solution. Candidates often report the following symptoms and conditions:
- Gynecomastia (feminine-looking breast tissue, linked to hormone causes)
- Sensitive tissue or tenderness on the chest
- Self-consciousness regarding chest appearance
You should reach a stable and healthy body weight before considering this procedure. If you are seeking correction of gynecomastia, it is best to investigate and resolve possible causes of the condition before surgery. To minimize the risk of complications, stop smoking at least 3 weeks before surgery.
Male Breast Reduction: How is it performed?
Dr. Aboolian may recommend an MRI or mammogram to determine the composition of your breast tissue. If surgery is recommended, expect about 1 hour of operating time. Local anesthesia or general anesthesia can be used, depending on the extent of tissue planned for removal. A combination of techniques will likely be involved. To sculpt the chest, liposuction is performed through a small incision in the areola or near the underarm. Glandular tissue, if present, rarely needs to be directly excised and removed through a peri-areolar incision. In cases where there is skin excess skin laxity causing breast sagging, skin may need to be removed (mastopexy) in order to achieve the desired results.
What to Expect After Male Breast Reduction
Recovery time is approximately 2 to 4 days, with the ability of going back to a desk job in 48 to 72 hours. After surgery, you will be wrapped in gauze and/or an elastic compression garment. Pain can be managed with prescription medications. Results are immediate, however it takes 2 to 4 months for the swelling to go away for the final results to be appreciated. The results should be permanent, as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle involving a healthy diet and exercise routine.
Your New Appearance
Male breast reduction / gynecomastia correction can enhance your appearance and self-confidence, but it won't necessarily change your looks to match your ideal. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them frankly with Dr. Aboolian.
