Liposuction

Liposuction is the surgical removal of fat using hollow tubes, called canulae. The goal is to diminish, contour, sculpt and thus create a marked reduction in size. Dr. Aboolian uses the “tumescent technique” combined with ultrasound assisted liposuction (UAL). The tumescent technique involves injecting dilute numbing medication and adrenalin with the infiltrating solution under the skin, thus allowing for decreased post operative degree of discomfort. The advantages of using the UAL are that it selectively disintegrates or melts the fat which in turn allows for easier removal of larger volumes of fat, and easier removal of fat from very dense areas such as the upper abdomen, back, waist area and male breasts. Previously, liposuctioed areas are also ideal for the use of UAL. The main benefits of the UAL to the patient are a lot less bruising and pain post operatively. Large volume liposuction is arbitrarily defined as more then 5,000 cc of pure fat removal. Volumes over 6,000 cc of pure fat are done in a hospital setting.

While liposuction will rapidly reduce body fat, our goal is lifetime maintenance. This is why long term success of maintaining the optimal body shape after liposuction procedure depends on individual life styles, including proper diet and exercise. Therefore, before considering liposuction, patients are evaluated to assess their commitment to a healthy life style. Liposuction surgery is postponed until such a commitment can be assured with reasonable certainty.
