Lip Enlargement
The appearance of one’s lips may be improved by procedures known collectively as “lip enhancement” or by reducing the wrinkles, which develop around the mouth secondary to aging. Lip enhancement is achieved by the dermal inclusion of various “filler” products. None of these fillers are permanent, however, fat grafting or the transfer of fatty tissue deposits from another area of one’s body, seems to provide a certain degree of stability in our experience. Collagen is beneficial for patients who have minimal to moderate loss of fullness in the lip tissue. Collagen provides a more defining lip border thus giving the impression of fuller lips. Fat grafting is reserved for patients with moderate to sever loss of fullness. Fat is commonly obtained from the lower torso, and often 20% to 50% of the grafted fat remains for many years.
Wrinkles around the lips can be determined using a variety of techniques including chemical peels, laser resurfacing and dermabrasion. Wrinkle ablation can be performed in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures. Recovery is usually quite rapid.
Corrective surgery for the lips is reserved for patients who have had unsatisfactory results with lip enhancement or for patients with congenital lip deformities such as redundant lips or “gummy smile”.
